What You Need to Know About the Indian Residential Schools and the Process Designed to Compensate Their Victims

The largest class action settlement in Canadian history to date, the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement (IRSSA) recognized the damage inflicted by the residential schools, and established a multi-billion-dollar fund to help former students in their recovery.

In this webinar, Michael Bay, who spent a decade adjudicating Indian Residential Schools abuse claims under the umbrella of the national process, will provide a good primer on the reality of the residential schools, an introduction to the inquisitorial and compensation process, and the healing methodology he incorporated into his work. This methodology can be used in a variety of litigious situations in your practice. Plus, this discussion of Indian Residential Schools is an excellent examination of power, privilege and bias.

Presenter: Michael Bay,is an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurosciences at McMaster University and adjunct professor of nursing at University of Toronto. He is an international speaker in the fields of mental health, consent and capacity, health privacy law as well as the history and impact of the Indian Residential Schools. He also services as a Deputy Judge of the Ontario Small Claims Court.
